The Grassy Gap mine is a reclaimed
surface mine. The mine permit and reclamation liability bond have been revoked by DMG. Weather in the mine
area has been very dry this summer. Localized heavy thunderstorms have occurred in the area the preceding
week.
Signs & Markers : DMG informational sign remains at intersection between Pit 2/3 road and Pit 5/6 road. Main
entrance gate at Routt County Road No. 27 was locked. DMG has been provided with [he combination. Gate
was locked upon leaving the site
Roads : The access road [o Pit 5 and 6 remains in good condition. Ditch along side Pit 5 access road has filled
with sediment and grassed in. Runoff flow through this ditch appears to still be functional. Access road to pi[ 1
was soft and muddy and not traveled. The access roads to Pits 2/3 was accessible. Ro]]ed dips along the Pit 2/3
access road have filled with sediment. The majority of water from the native springs on access road 2/3 is
directed off the roadway. The spring flow cuts across the road in two places, yet the road is still driveable. A
gully, roughly 8-12 inches deep has formed across the upper portion of Access road 2/3. Access directly into the
upper pits was no[ attempted though the pits could be accessed on foot.
Hydrologic Balance: Pond 5 was discharging. Pond 5 appears stable. No additional slumping of the pond cut
slope, or of the pond inlet was apparent. Pit 5 spoil spring is flowing.
Rev~etation: Vegetation in the pit areas appeared [o be in fair to good condition. This spring has been
unusually dry. Grasses are just beginning to green up and remain small-about 4 inches in height. Few weedy
species were noted. Livestock have grazed heavily in pits 5 and 6. Hundreds of sheep and a shepherd were
active in Pits 5 and 6.
Slides: No new movement of slide areas was noted.
Wildlife: No wildlife other than songbirds was observed. Heavy grazing by domestic livestock was apparent
throughout site.
