PROSPECTING ID # M-87-097
INSPECTION DATE 09/14/94 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ACO
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was performed by the Division as part of its monitoring of 110 permits. The
operator was notified concerning this inspection. This inspector met with several county
representatives before this inspection, to discuss what would be checked at the site. During
the inspection, the representative named on page 1 arrived at the site.
The operation was well within the permit boundary. This is a 9.9-acre site, measuring 660
ft x 650 ft (approx a equate). The permit area was marked by a fenceline along the north and
east aides, and survey markers at the northwest and southeast corners, along the fence.
There was no marker at the southwest corner, though a faint road extended east-west along the
south side. Lack of this SW-corner marker ie not regarded as a problem, but will be
important to future inspectors and future operations at the site. The mining has not reached
the western or southern edges, eo marking that corner could help keep the operation within
the boundary. The operator is reminded that offsite disturbance is a possible violation to
the statutes and the permit.
The pit is 10 to 15 feet deep. Topsoil is stripped before mining, and stockpiled along the
east aide anct in the NE and SE corners. The piles appear stable.
The pit floor is nearly level, dry, and contains several small stockpiles of product. The
pit currentl.r measures approx 530 ft x 530 ft ( from the fences to even with farthest
disturbance). There is still room to expand the pit.
The soil and gravel layers observed in the profile of the highwalls reveals several distinct
zones of gravel alternating with zones with no gravel. If mining operations can adequately
separate this unusable/non-gravelly portion, it may be valuable for use in the reclamation
of the pit.
The main road used presently in the access to the pit floor is along the north fenceline,
entering the north aide. Previous entrance was via a road from the northwest corner. That
road, however, has been intercepted by mining; the 15-foot vertical highwall ie at the end
of that road. That road, fortunately, has a dip and berm to stop vehicular traffic on it,
ans prevent accidental falls into the pit. The operator may consider posting something more,
closer to they highwall, for additional safety. It ie recognized that this is an active
portion of the pit, and highwall reduction is not deemed necessary. This ie not regarded as
a problem under the topic of "backfill and grading."
There were no problems observed during this inspection.
I & E Contact Address
NAME Miguel Luian
OPERATOR Coneios County
STREET PO BOx 157
CITY/STATE/ZIF• Coneios CO 61129
cc: Jim Stevens/DMG
^ CE
^ BL
^ FS
^ HW
^ HMWMD (CH)
^ SE
^ WQCD (CH)
^ OTHER
