III. Comments/Compliance
This was a complete inspection conducted by Jim Burnell of CDMG, accompanied by Henry
Austin of OSM, on the afternoon of Monday, June 7, 2004. This site was quiet and
deserted. The weather was hot and sunny.
At the East Mine, vegetation in the area below the road was going brown already. Various
areas of the area below the slope are dominated by different species. A species of sage
dominates one area, wheatgrass another, mountain brome another. There is yellow sweet
clover throughout along with a great deal of annual pennycress. A large patch of whitetop
near the large boulder is going to seed.
There was no evidence of erosion at the bottom of the slope. A berm remains along much
of the length of the slope between the reclaimed area and the river. That berm remains in
tact and has not been breeched, so there is no evidence of any sediment reaching the river
from the site.
The reclaimed area above the road shows some patches of cheatgrass and some bare
spots.
The slump onto the road was seeping slightly and the ditch was wet. There are some wet
areas above the road where water has collected and these areas contain excellent green
perennial vegetation.
At the middle mine there is a good stand of perennial grass, with a lot of crested wheatgrass.
Also notable are the rose bushes there. Below the road the vegetation is also good, but as
nearly everywhere along the road, shows a great deal of bindweed, flowering at the time of
the visit. The middle mine was stable with no erosion, both above and below the road.
The west mine showed some cheatgrass for the first time, along with bindweed. The pond
embankments were stable and the pond was dry. Overall, the vegetation is good on the
west mine site. There was no evidence of off-site impact along the river.
