FlPR-28-2005 13 48 Lafarge Metro Land
i
303 657 4037
will be planted in order to reduce the abundance of weedy species. To the extent possible, topsoil
I stockpiles will be mowed to reduce the cover by annual weed species.
Rapid Turnover of Stoekniles. Product stockpiles can serve as sites for some annual
plant species. The configuration of these stockpiles is such tha[ it is not possible to use a mower,
and it is not desirable to treat weeds on these sites with herbicides. The most practical way to
I wntrol weeds is to plan for a rapid turnover of the various product stockpiles.
Bnm1IIE. Burning can be a useful tool for weed control, however it may not be practical
within the permit area of the mine, It may be possible to use this approach on some of the azeas
that will not be mined or possibly on sites that have been reclaimed. Burning releases nutrients
that ~ tied up in plant litter and tends to favor development of grasses rather than broad-leaved
specie. Additionally, it temporarily reduces vegetation cover, such that populations of perennial
weedy forb species are more readily seen and can be more easily treated with herbicides. Open
burning may require obtaining permits from the Coumy Health Departrnent. if burning is used as
a control technique, it will be done during the spring season.
Control of weed species at the Noah Delta Pit will include: monitoring, herbicide
application, and mowing.
P.04
~,I
^
,, ^
I
;': .
~,'
k
' ~L
~I it
f~
1 ".;
1
