III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations
made during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during
the inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a complete inspection conducted by Joe Dudash of the Colorado DMG. Bill Bear
represented the operator during the records check portion of the inspection.
Hydrology
The sediment pond was dry. The gated primazy valve was closed. The emergency and primary
spillways•were functional. The pond inslopes and outslopes were stable. The mine water
treatment pond was discharging at about 20 to 30 gpm. The water level in the pond was about 6
inches below the top horizontal pipe. Pond inslopes and outslopes were stable. The water in the
pond was of a very dark color. The temperature of the mine water discharge at the outlet of the
dischazge pipe going into the river was 68°F. The river water temperature was 70°F.
There was some ponded water around well AW-1 from the west seep. The east seep was flowing
at about 20 to 30 gpm. The temperature of the seep water, as it came out of the ground, was
84°F. The seep water was a dark orange color.
The seep water that had ponded around well AW-1 may be a problem. This seep water should be
diverted away. There were no problems with well AW-3. Collection and diversion ditches were
well grassed and had sufficient capacity. The culvert at the entrance was clear.
Roads
There was a cable strung across the entrance to the site. The paved road was in good shape.
There were no obstructions or debris on the road. The bridge was passable. The mine site gate
was closed and locked.
Sins and Markers
The mine ID sign was up at the entrance. Surface disturbance markers were up as well.
Reclamation
There was good vegetative cover on the reclaimed slopes, although the vegetative cover on the
flat areas ranged from poor to moderate. There were no stability or erosional problems on the
reclaimed slopes.
Records
The records were in compliance. Please refer to the attached records checklist.
c:\ms97\bear3\insp0702
