Review of $lasting Operations of Summit Brick <br />ANALYSES of BLASTING IMPACTS, cont' <br />Results from carefully controlled and documented blast damage studies by the U.S. Bureau <br />of Mines (RJ 7901, ]983), and Butkovitch & Hearst (1976} indicate that the extent of <br />localized blasthole damage in the form of radial cracking is generally a function of radial <br />charge diameter, explosive type, and rock characteristics. It is important to note that the <br />damage findings in RI 7901 are consistent with those of other researchers. In light of this <br />correlation, it is reasonable to conclude that their damage prediction formula (CR = 20 to <br />26 Ro) can be used to predict the extent of rock rupture damage. <br />Assuming the highest rupturing ratio (R = 26r}, the blasting at Summit Brick, using <br />6.25-inch diameter charges, Maximum rupturing would not extend more thanl62.5 inches <br />(13.54 R) beyond the blastholes. To prevent any possibility of damage to the buried <br />telephone lines, AG recommends that a minimum distance of 100 feet should be <br />maintained between any buried lines and the nearest biasthole. At this cautious distance, it <br />is extremely unlikely that blasting or any other normal mining activities would cause any <br />damage to buried utility lines. <br />2.2 Potential for Damage to Overhead Power Lines and Traffic on Nearby Roads: <br />The site map for the 8-Mile Clay Mine operation shows that the permitted mining area is <br />with-in close proximity of two overhead power lines. One power-line is located to the <br />southwest, very close to the permitted area. In addition, there is another power-line <br />located approximately 500 ft from the permit boundary. State Highway 9 passes the 8- <br />Mile Clay Mine along the south-western permit boundary adjacent to the power-line. The <br />remotely feasible that the small-charge blasting at this operation could impact these roads <br />and power lines with flying rock from a blast. At the Fox Mine, the site map shows that <br />the permitted area is within 200 ft. of Siloam Rd. In addition, the Cedarwood Clay <br />operation is within 1000ft. of Pickney Rd. These roads are only un-improved and have <br />very low use. They are not a major through route, <br />19 <br />
