Review of Blasting Operations of Summit Brick <br />.ANALYSES of BLASTING IMPACTS, coast' <br />Information about area wells, from the Colorado Department of Water Resources, <br />indicates that the depth of area water-wells ranges from 9ft. to 500 feet. The shallow wells <br />are in alluvium and geologically above the all blasting zones. Since the total depth of <br />mining at all of Summit Brick's operations is very shallow (less than 30 feet), the <br />excavations will be hundreds of feet above the ground water table and the aquifers that <br />feed the wells. Moreover, since the wells are topographically separated from the proposed <br />rock blasting and extraction areas, ground fracturing and excavations at the Summit Brick <br />Mines will not interfere with the recharging capability of these wells. <br />All water wells are well beyond the permanent rupturing zone of the proposed blast areas. <br />In addition they are separated by geological and topographical conditions, thus they will <br />experience extremely low elastic ground motions. Therefore it is extremely unlikely that <br />the blasting and mining activities at all of the Summit Brick Operations would have anv <br />negative impact on neighboring wells. <br />2.1-4 Potential For Damage to Buried Utility Lines: <br />When explosive charges detonate in rock, most of the energy is used to break and displace <br />the blasted burden of rack between the charge and the nearest free-face. However, other <br />energy is released in form of ground vibration, air overpressure (concussion), elastic strain <br />waves and high-pressure gas pulses. When blasting occurs very close to buried utilih~ lines <br />(within about 10 ft) damage can occur if the line lies within ground that is physically <br />ruptured by the blast. <br />Groand Rnptare Damage to Lines: <br />Crushing usually occurs in the rock very near the charge. The extent of this compressive <br />and shear failure zone is usually limited to one or two charge radii. Beyond the plastic <br />crushing zone, the rock or ground is temporarily deformed by elastic strain waves. For <br />some distance, tangential strain intensity exceeds the rock's strength and new fractures are <br />created. <br />17 <br />
