(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1977-459
INSPECTION DATE 8127/04 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ESC
OBSHRVATIONS
This was an inspection of the Lake County Gravel Pit (Airport Pit) conducted by Erica Crosby
of the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology. Brad Palmer of Lake County Road and Bridge
and Lake County Commissioner Kenneth Olsen were present during the inspection.
The mine site is located 1 34 miles southwest of Leadville on Airport Road. A 112 Conversion
Application (CN-O1) was approved on April 28, 2000 that increased the permit area from 8
acres to 55.97 acres. The material mined from this pit is used as road base material for Lake
County roads. Amine sign was posted at the mine entrance with the required information.
Permit boundary markers delineating the permit area were noted.
Mining is progressing to the north into the hillside. The operator is mining the pit elopes
at 3h:ly. Mining is complete on the northwest corner of the site, and has been graded. The
operator stated that this area will be reclaimed next spring.
The 112 permit requires a topsoil replacement depth of 6". Very little topsoil has been
salvaged to date. Two small piles were noted above the pit area. According to the soils
information in the file, approximately 8" can be salvaged and used for reclamation. The
operator will need to salvage all available topsoil on site and store the material in
stockpiles. The stockpiles should be stored in places and configurations to minimize erosion
and located in areas where disturbance by ongoing mining operations. In addition, piles
stored in place for longer than one year must be stabilized with the planting of annual
and/or perennial grasses. The operator will need to ensure that all remaining topsoil is
salvaged in order to achieve the replacement depth of 6". If the operator plans to
supplement the site with other materials in lieu of topsoil, then a revision to the permit
reflecting this change will need to be submitted and approved by the Division.
A crushing and screening facility is located on site. A trailer on site stores oil, grease
and other lubricants. The facility is very clean, and no problems were noted. A fuel tank
is stored on site. A berm will need to be constructed around the tank to contain any
unforeseen leaks or spills.
I & 8 Contact Address
^ CE
NAME Brad Palmer ^ BL
OPERATOR Lake County Road & Bridge ^ FS
STREET PO Box 964, 1200 Hazel Street ^ HW
CITY/STATE/ZIP Leadville, CO 80461 ^ HMWMD (CH)
^ SE
^ WQCD (CH)
Cc: Carl Mount; DMG (via a-mail)
