OBSERVATIONS
The Climax camp area was inspected. Climax continues to aggressively
pursue demolition of buildings and facilities that will not be needed
for future mining and mineral processing operations. All recyclable
demolition debris is being collected and shipped off site. All
buildings to be demolished are screened for asbestos, and removed
asbestos is disposed of in the onsite asbestos disposal site permitted
by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The
single largest demolition project at Climax, the no. 3 mill, is
scheduled for 2007.
McNulty Gulch between Highway 91 and the Robinson;POnd haul road (aka
coffer dam) was inspected. This relatively small area was filled with
very wet to saturated tailings and sediments. During 2005, this area
was stabilized using geogrid, capped, and seeded. A number of mature
trees were transplanted onto the stabilized surface.
The massive water treatment sludge management project at Ten Mile Pond
was inspected. This project was implemented to assure that there will
be ample storage for sludge in the upcoming years, and to improve
removal of dissolved aluminum from the mine water. The photos of this
project included in this report document the project progress and
status at the time of this inspection.
Observations made during this inspection demonstrate the Climax Mine's
continued commitment to reclamation of the currently inactive mine, and
exemplary compliance with the terms of their reclamation permit and the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Act. No problems or potential
violations were observed.
cc: Carl Mount, DMG (via email)
Inspection & Enforcement Contact Address
NAME Gary Slifka
OPERATOR Climax Molybdenum Company
STREET Climax Mine
CITY/STATE/ZIP Climax, CO 80429
