The site is located approximately 6 miles northeast of Trinidad, Colorado and approximately 1 mile west of
the junction of highways 160 and 350. There are several active and reclaimed gravel mines in the general area
due to the local geology consisting of ridge top alluvial gravel deposits. These deposits appear to be remnants
of a large fan or sandstone massive radiating away from Fischer's Peak located several miles southwest of
these features. The fan has been dissected over time leaving a ridge top/valley topography across several
miles. The proposed pit is situated on top of one of these ridges between p larger valley on the west and a
smaller one on the east. Soils appear to range from thin and rocky on exposures to reasonably thick in
depositional areas down-slope near the shoulders before falling off into the valley. Existing vegetation consists
of a Blue grama dominated grass understory with a small scattering of shrub clumps on the more level areas.
Where the sideslopes fall away from the ridge there are more shrubs established continuing across slope until it
levels off along the valley floors where the grasses once again dominate. the gravel deposit is approximately
20 feet thick and will be mined across the entire ridge top except for the far western edge which will remain as
a visual barrier to a residence located in the western valley floor. There were no structures observed within the
affected area or the permit area.
There was an objection letter received at our office concerning the possibility of a Native American burial site
located within the permitted area. The operator initiated an archaeological investigation which indicated no
such feature existed on the permit area. There were three sites identified indicating possible pre-historic
activities and the appropriate forms were submitted to the State Historical Preservation Office. The office
came back with a negative determination concerning any historical significance.
Based on the physical inspection of the proposed operation, there were no observations made indicating that
a mining operation could not be approved for this location. This concluded the inspection.
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Mr. Tom Brubaker
OPERATOR: Valco.lnc.
STREET: Inn South Ugh Straat
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Rncky~rrl.
