(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M_19A4_139
INSPECTION DATE: nna~~a ~d INSPECTORS INITIALS: ~1~L
OBSERVATIONS
This was a normal monitoring inspection conducted by Tony Waldron of DMG. Shane Kiscki of Pioneer Sand
Company was present on the site but did not accompany the inspector during the physical inspection. The site
is located approximately 5 miles north of Golden, Colorado and '/z mile east of Hwy 93. The permitted area is
situated on a perched alluvial fan similar to the Rocky Flats deposit.
The mine is spread out over a wide area with some areas to the southeast in final reclamation and most of the
west side of the mine in various phases of mining. In addition, there is an active mining site east of the main
office/sales yard area. Most of the west side area appears to be used for processing and stockpiling of the
various products that are produced from the mining deposit.
One problem that was observed to be occurring over almost the entire mine site is the presence of noxious
weeds, particularly diffuse knapweed (centaurs diffusa). This plant was observed all over the mine site
including on overburden and topsoil stockpiles as well as product stockpiles. The reclaimed areas were
supporting healthy populations of this weed along with a host of other noxious weeds such as dalmation
toadflax, Canada thistle, etc. In addition, a large overburden stockpile that is located southeast of the main
sales yard has several established patches of knapweed on it. When this stockpile is used during reclamation,
the weeds will simply be spread throughout the area where this stockpile is utilized. Several product stockpiles
also had knapweed present creating a situation whereby seeds are transported off site and can then invade a
new location. The original application indicated that weeds should not be a problem but if they became a
problem a plan would be worked out with the CSU cooperative extension service and the NRCS to address the
situation. Since there is not a weed control plan currently in place for this permit, this will be cited as a problem
on page three of this report along with appropriate corrective actions which will include submitting a technical
revision to the application to incorporate a noxious weed management plan. Attached to assist the operator
in preparing this plan are several documents including the Minerals Program Weed Control Policy, Elements of a
Weed Control Plan, a typical weed control plan technical revision, and Guidelines for Noxious Weed
Management Plans
--The Bnancial warranty. for this sife is $SO,oQ0A0. She-lcrstanrwal-report map was not able to be located fio
determine the exact number of acres that are disturbed or reclaimed. Previous annual report maps show
approximately 40 acres in various stages of either active mining, re-graded, re-graded and re-seeded, etc. The
financial warranty would be adequate if these are the correct disturbances, however, one question about the
site is whether or not the sales yard area is included in the total disturbed acreage. In order to get a better
handle on whether or not the financial warranty is adequate for this site, this will also be cited as a problem on
page three. The corrective actions will be to submit a current summary of the various stages of disturbance
along with a current map depicting these disturbances. Once this information is received, the adequacy of
the financial warranty will be re-calculated.
This concluded the inspection
I & E Contact Address I' HMWMD (CH)
I' SE
NAME: Joe Kraia T WQCD (CH)
T OTHER
OPERATOR: Pioneer Sand COmaanV
STREET:
CITY/STATE/ZIP:
cc: r CE
I' BL
T FS
t HW
