A monitoring inspection of the Arnusch Gravel Pit 3 was conducted as part of the Division's 4-year inspection program.
Present during the inspection was Mr. Arnusch.
2. The Arnusch Gravel Pit 3 is permitted for a total of 9.8 acres with a maximum disturbance at any one time of 6 acres.
The operator has posted a financial warranty of $5,000. The post-mining land use is agriculture.
3. The Arnusch Gravel Pit 3 is an active pit with excavation oauring in the dry creek bed of Lost Creek. The excavation
consists of lowering the creek bed approximately 4-8'. Mr. Arnusch has done an excellent job of reclaiming
rnntemporaneously and regrading the disturbed creek bed to natural rnntours and slopes no steeper than 3:1. There
was virtually no evidence of an active excavation at the site. All mining disturbances appear to be in accordance with
the mine plan. This inspector estimates there is less than 1 acre needing minor grading at this time. The financial
warranty is adequate to complete the reclamation plan.
4. A minor concern noted during the inspection was the site access road runs directly across the creek at the upstream
end of the pit with the elevation of the road being 1.5-2' above the invert of the creek. The road and fill across the
creek may tend to cause future flood waters to backup rather than flow freely into the recently regraded channel.
This inspector encouraged Mr. Harnusch to reconfigure the access road as a low water crossing with the road
elevation being the same as the invert of the channel upstream.
5. There was a sign near the entrance to the site; however, it was not readable and did not contain the information
required by Rule 3.1.16. Also, there were no boundary markers established to delineate the 9.8 acre permit
boundary. The Division considers this matter to be a problem that will require corrective actions to bring the site into
compliance with Rule 3.1.16. Attached is a copy of Rule 3.1.12 with requirements for signs and markers. Please see
page 3 for corrective actions.
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Nikolaus Arnusch
OPERATOR: 34527 WCR 6
STREET: KPPnPShurg, CO 80643
CITY/STATE/ZIP:
cc: Carl Mount, DMG (via E-mail)
Attachment
Certified Mail Return
Receipt Request No. 7099 3400 0013 9901 5972
