Mining and Safety. Weather was warm and slightly overcast Site
conditions were dry A primary purpose of the mspec6on was to conduct site reconnaissance for
possible revegetation sampling.
We drove to the Arness-McGrrffen portal area The road is severely eroded and difficult to nawgale
At the portal area. large gullies, up to 4 feet deep ewst as observed In the photo below A significant
amount of debris has been dumped in this area, including an old computer, an animal hide and skull,
bottles etc.
Revegetation success is good at the base of the portal and immediate portal slope area However, a
large infestation of Canadian th~slle ~s becoming established at the top of the portal backflll slope.
Without weed control efforts, the patch will continue to degrade the revegetation efforts.
,~" , ~
Thistle Patch
The Arness-McGnffen mine site was permitted m 1977 IPermd No 77-3 uglc) In 1979, two cease
and desist orders were issued. A permanent program permit was submitted m 1981 but it was never
found complete, The S 13,000 bond submitted and subsequently forfeded was for the 1977 permit
Therefore, the reclamation standards pertaining to this area would be considered 'pre-law' The
Arness-McGnffen mrne sde ~s m very close prox, mdy to the Coal Gulch (Peerless Resources) mine
below However as noted below the saes are considered separate.
