STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
. - 1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866-3567
FAX: (303) 832-8106
~ December 20, 2005
Mary Seifert
~'' Seifert Construction
~ ' PO Box 305
Westcliffe, CO 81252
RFCF~~ED
DEC z~
~%ision o/ly!»eralaaad~o8Y
COLORADO
DIVISION OF
MINERALS
GEOLOGY
REC LAMATION•MINING
SAF ETPSCIENCE
Bill Owens y ~ .,
Governor ~C(~t
Russell George ~,~,
Executive DirecNr
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
~" /
Re: Schoolfield Pit, Permit M-1993-027, Completion of Corrective Actions (Inspection Date 9/29/05).
Dear Ms. Seifert,
I have received your letter of 11/30/05, in which you describe the completion of the required corrective actions at
the site named above. The problems concerned the topics of Topsoil, Debris, and Permit corner markers.
Topsoil -Thank you for providing the volume measurement of the stockpiled topsoil. That amount would appear
to adequately cover an area of 1.5 acres or less. Please ensure that as the disturbed area expands, that all available
topsoil is stripped (ahead of the highwall), protected by stockpiling and revegetation it until it is used for
reclamation. Also, as the pit floor expands, it maybe possible to incrementally reclaim the margins of the pit:
grading the slopes and replacing topsoil on those areas.
Debris -The removal you performed has eliminated the problem onsite. This office may allow minor amounts of
this type of debris (a type which is easily disposed of) without revising the permit, or may allow larger amounts
onsite if approved through a permit revision. Please contact this office if you wish to apply for a revision.
Permit comer markers -The markers installed abate this problem as well. They are considered highly visible, and
hopefully they will be durable also. Please ensure that they are maintained, and that all mining disturbance is
contained within the boundaries, including material that could slough from the hilltop areas being affected.
The Division appreciates the written notice of the adequate and timely correction of the three problems. If there are
any questions, please contact me at the Division's Durango field office: 701 Camino del Rio, Room 125, Durango,
CO 81301; telephone:970-247-5193.
Sincerely,
~a~ ~~~~
Bob Oswald
Environmental Protection Specialist
Ec: Harry Posey, DMG
Caschoolfield 3pb con/rco
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Active and Inactive Mines Geological Survey
