Follow the road to the dead end and
to the minesite. This mine is under a cease and desist order by the State of
Colorado for mining without a permit. Current production was approximately
4,000 tons of coal annually, and the production is projected to increase to
10,000 or 12,000 tons if the market warrants the change.
McCar was mining the five and one-half foot Number Two or "C" vein from the
federal coal lease site. Three to five people have been working this mine for
the past several years. There are two portals: one Serves as an entryway,
exit and coal removal ramp, the other is an exhaust portal. The coal crusher,
sorter and loadout facility is built onto the entryway-exit portal. This unit
extends over the lower bench which also serves as an equipment storage area.
This seven-tenths of an acre site is ninety two hundred feet above sea level
i in a rolling mountainous area that is covered with grasses, oak brush and
stands of aspen trees. Ohio Creek flows two miles to the south, nine hundred
feet lower in elevation than the minesite.
COMPLIANCE WITH INTERIM REGULATIONS
717.11 AUTHORIZATIONS TO OPERATE:
Mr. Cleaver was reluctant to discuss the mine and related problems
that have resulted in a cease and desist order that was issued by
the state. Due to the late hour of our arrival, we did not drive
Dack to Gunnison to review the mining plans. Mr. Weaver's brother,
.Henry, who was a former co-owner of the mine, has some of the infor-
mation at his residence.
