May 29, 1980
Mr. Bob Weaver
117 S. 8th St.
Gunnison, Colorado 81230
RE: Inspection Report, 5/14)80
OC A2 Coal
Our File: M79-38
Dear Bob:
Enclosed, please find my written field report recording my observations
of May 14, 1980. You might want to save this for your files.
As I mentioned on the phone, Todd Gibson has been considering your sedi-
mentation control plans and se soon as he can complete hie assessment of
the problems, I will communicate hie findings to you.
I do not, qet, have any really great ideas for dealing with pour landslide
material. I spoke with our geotechnical engineer, Jim Pendleton, about the
landslides and he mill plan to visit you during the second week in June.
He suggested that a "french drain" across the slope above your mine would
reduce the seepage that probably caused the instability and enhance the
long term stability of the site when you reclaim and revegetate it. (My
understanding ie that a "french drain" is simply a trench with a perforated
pipe near the bottom, backfilled with clean gravel.)
With regard to your proposed coal stockpile and your need for a waste rock
storage area (tanporary?), I spoke to Dave Holm who suggested we give the
question consideration in the light of your lon$ term development needs.
Ie there any way of leaving the excess rock underground? Flow much e!aste
rock are you expecting to produce? If your development plena involve pro-
duction of 10,000 .T, to 15,000 T., we should give adequate consideration to
extending your lower bench to the west,
I hope to be a61e to visit with you when Jim Pendleton goes on tour and we
should plan to discuss these questlo~further then.
I am hopeful that we can resolve these difficulties and get you a permit that
will help you work efficiently and I want to work with you to do eo ae smoothly
as possible. Please don't hesitate to call if I can be of help.
Sincerely,
Peter H. Evans
Reclamation Specialist
cc: C. F. Carrico P/~~ ~J"M
___... .
