III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during
the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the
facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection of the La Plata Coal Mine conducted by Tom Kaldenbach of the Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology. No one else was present. The ground was dry.
HYDROLOGIC BALANCE
There are no ponds or ditches on the site. Vegetative cover appears to be adequately controlling erosion
throughout the site with the exception of a gully in the main drainage. This gully extends approximately 100 ft.
down the drainage from an upper bench to a concrete pad midway down the slope (see Figure 1). In places the
gully is up to 5 ft. deep and 1 to 2 ft. wide. Geocell fabric in the gully has been undercut by approximately 5 ft.
(see Figure 2). No sediment fan was evident at the downhill end of the gully. Gully or rill problems were not
found elsewhere on the site. Other than the gully, the site appears to be no more susceptible to erosion than
surrounding undisturbed lands. There were no signs of seepage below the reclaimed portal. The slope leading
up to the portal bench appears stable. No off-site hydrologic impacts were apparent in Hay Gulch downhill from
the disturbed area.
