MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: ai-1477-377 <br />INSPECTION DATE: ~/ism7 INSPECTORS INITIALS: -A11~1_ <br />OBSERVATIONS <br />This was a normal monitoring inspection conducted by Tony Waldron of DMG along with Joe Welte, Matt Welte, and Joe <br />Gagliano representing Summit Brick. The site is located approximately 5 miles northwest of Penrose, Colorado. The pit is <br />situated around a small mountain in a transisition zone from a large outwash fan formation up into more mountainous <br />terrain. The affected area was properly delineated with visible markers and there was a mine identification sign posted at <br />the entrance to the site. <br />The clay deposits are layered in uplifted angles per the mountain folds. Mining is conducted by removing the topsoil and <br />arty overburden which usually exposes the clay layers which are then removed and stockpiled for removal to the Pueblo <br />brick plant on an as needed basis. The entire clay deposit will be mined, meaning the small mountain will be completely <br />leveled upon completion of mining. One question the operator had was whether or not they could sell decorative rock <br />that is separated out from the overburden and whether or not they could crush some of the overburden into smaller sizes <br />to be sold as decorative rock. The answer is yes, however, the mining and reclamation plan will need to be <br />revised via a technical revision to the application. This revision should include the additional mining activities that <br />are planned, such as the location of product stockpiles, overburden stockpiles, etc. and also the impact or change that this <br />might have on the approved reclamation plan, especiaAy with respect to the post-mining topography. <br />One problem that was identified and will require follow-up is the infrequent use of explosives on the site. In accordance <br />with Rule 6.5(4) of the Construction Materials Rules and Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board; "At <br />sites where blasting is part of the proposed mining or reclamation plan, the applicant shall demonstrate through <br />appropriate blasting, vibration, geotechnical, and structural engineering analyses, that off-site areas will not be adversely <br />affected by blasting". Since explosives are used, even if infrequently, the appropriate analyses will need to be <br />incorporated into the permit application via a technical revision.
