Comment/Objection Narrative*
I am writing to express my concerns over the CJK milling project.
There are many issues with the proposed project that cause me great concern.
Firstly,as a resident of the east side of Leadville I am concerned about the mining waste that will need to be
hauled near or through my neighborhood to be transported to the place where it will be milled. The potential for
dust laden with heavy metals becoming airborne raises a major concern for me.Also, the increased truck traffic
through and around my neighborhood is a concern in regard to quality of life for my neighborhood's residents.
Wear and tear on our already severely degraded roads is also a concern.
Another major concern revolves around the potential environmental ramifications around disturbing the tailing's
piles which were stabilized so many years ago by the EPA and remain stable. What kind of problems might
disturbing them cause?
Also,CJK's lack of a waste management plan is a major concern for me.The proposal for managing the 500,
000 tons of newly created tailings only covers the first 12-15 months of the 10 year project. What is the forever
management plan for toxic leakage after CJK leaves town?Who will pay for it?And who carries the liability?
And then there are water issues.CJK currently has no confirmed water source, but whatever source they
eventually draw from it will be draining precious water from our growing community.Additionally, after years of
cleanup work by the EPA, Leadville now has amazingly clean water and the Arkansas river watershed is a
testament to that cleanup work and a major source of tourism and income for our region. I do not think that we
as a community can afford to jeopardize that.
For these reasons and many others I beg you to deny CJK their permit to proceed with this project.
Permitting Action Comment/Objection is Regarding
New Permit Change to Existing Permit
Permit Number*(?)
Enter a valid permit number
M1990057
County*
Colorado County where the proposed operation is located
Lake
Enter one county only
Site Name
Perm ittee/Operator Name
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Are there supporting photos, maps, or documents you wish to upload?
Yes No
By submitting this form electronically you agree to receive any/all follow up correspondence from the Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety at the email address you have provided.
