Comment/Objection Narrative*
As a full-time resident and homeowner, I will be directly and immediately impacted by this mining operation.
As a member of the scientific community and more specifically having an academic and professional
background in Ecological Restoration, I know first-hand the negative environmental implications an operation
like this will have on the surrounding area and the greater watershed.
Having performed many ground water and surface water studies in the area while working as part of a team
contracted by the EPA, DNR,and DRMS, I know the long history and current struggles of managing the existing
AMD and ARD on the east side of Leadville and understand very well the implications and risks associated with
disturbing sites and exposing tailings to further oxygenation and precipitation.
The Leadville Mill and CJK milling have thus far failed to produce documentation of protocols and procedures
for adequate removal, transport, and reclamation of the site that will not cause more contamination, leaching
and pose an immediate threat to the surrounding environment, people and wildlife.
Furthermore, as an avid recreationist in the Arkansas River valley, there will be adverse impacts to the
watershed impacting both human health and safety in addition to fisheries. Our blue ribbon fisheries and
recreation through rafting and other whitewater activities attract economic revenue in a county that is rapidly
shifting from an extraction-based to a recreation-based economy. Maintaining healthy rivers and reducing
additional contamination is paramount to the survival of local small businesses and the Lake County residents
they employ. The Leadville Mill would be an enormous step back in the growth of the local economy and will
only benefit CJK Milling at the expense of the greater Lake County economy.
I implore DRMS to strongly reject future requests from CJK Milling to re-open the Leadville Mill.
Permitting Action Comment/Objection is Regarding
New Permit Change to Existing Permit
Permit Number* (')
Enter a valid permit number
M1990057
County*
Colorado County where the proposed operation is located
Lake
Enter one county only
Site Name
Leadville mill
Perm ittee/Operator Name
CJK milling
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Are there supporting photos, maps, or documents you wish to upload?
Yes No
By submitting this form electronically you agree to receive any/all follow up correspondence from the Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety at the email address you have provided.
