August 2025 Conditions:
Hillside of Webster Pass Road—Adit is closed, monument in place. Seep runs from adit area
across the road. Small collapse area (2x2x1) shows some settlement in the fill. Smaller prospect
adit upslope is approximately 5x4x5 ft deep. Area gets heavy visitation, evidence of social trails,
shooting, trash.
Creekside of Webster Pass Road—open adit (roughly 5 x 3 x unk) adjacent to road/parking area
flowing substantial water into trench network about 200 feet long that leads to creek.Trench is
roughly 195 ft long, 2 ft wide by 10 feet deep closer to adit and road, then becomes shallower
toward creek. Water is 8-12 inches deep (assumed low flow in August). Adit runs roughly parallel to
the creek to the NW. Water is likely being captured from the creek through 2 vertical openings
upstream. Seasonal flow overland out of the creek bank is apparent. The area has heavy mineral
precipitate and appears to be an iron fen. There is no obvious creek inflow location to the
adit/trench. Photos from 2002 inspection show water at surface in these trenches, so likely adit
was totally submerged and may not have been identified at that time. Unclear the purposes of the
trenches (dewatering mine? Part of the processing system (hydro?)).
Proposed reclamation:
Water quality sampling?
Mono plug two shaft locations upstream of the adit/trench area to attempt to cut off infiltration of
creek water into the adit system.
Backfill trench and adit with rockfill (limestone for the pH?) to line and allow drainage to move
through, then onsite fill to cover remaining void.
Grade to prevent ponding water.
Soil amendments?/ Revegetate (although highly unlikely anything will grow in this area).
Funding: Estimated cost $70,000-$100,000
Will not qualify for OSM grant
No bond remaining
Severance Tax?
Freeport?
U S FS?
