Comment/Objection Narrative*
Hi Division of Reclamation,
I have numerous concerns about the M1977410 Cross Gold Mine permit application.
'The applicants have not shown how they will control water pollution during and after mining. Given their history
of water violations, this is a significant concern to any of us in the area who rely on wells for our water,or for the
City of Boulder, which uses Barker Reservoir as a source of drinking water.
'There is insufficient information about how the operators plan to assess the full extent of the potential damage
to the bodies of water in the surrounding areas, leaving significant potential for damage to downstream users.
'There is insufficient information about their plans to mitigate wildlife impacts, including pollution, sound, and
habitat changes.
'There is insufficient information about the need to increase the size of mining operations by 1900%
'In addition to the wildlife impacts, this area sees a significant amount of recreational usage, the impacts to
which are not sufficiently addressed in the plan.
'There is insufficient information about the plan for safe handling of explosives,as well as fire mitigation in case
of an accident. With winds that regularly gust over 50MPH in the direction of Nederland, this is also a significant
concern that has not been adequately addressed in the plan.
'Milling operations are referenced, but insufficient detail is provided to assess the impacts of this milling.
'There is insufficient information about their plans for safely processing the ore.
'There is insufficient information about their financial warranty in case of an environmental disaster as well as
the plan for fiscal responsibility in case of Grand Island Resources insolvency or bankruptcy. Mining accident
cleanup and mitigation can be expensive, and taxpayers will end up having to pay if Grand Island Resources
has not planned for that contingency.
'Given the operators'repeated and recent history of taking 2 years to address the cease and desist due to
excessive release of heavy metals, which did impact the water up here, this application is lacking a plan to
mitigate future negative consequences of irresponsible mining practices. As recently as four months ago, they
also had inadequately explained spikes in copper release. Until this company has demonstrated their ability to
consistently safely operate a mine, I would strongly recommend against approval of this permit.
Permitting Action Comment/Objection is Regarding
• New Permit Change to Existing Permit
Permit Number* (?)
Enter a valid permit number
M1977410
County*
Colorado County where the proposed operation is located
Boulder
Enter one county only
Site Name
Cross Gold Mine
Perm ittee/Operator Name
Grand Island Resources
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Are there supporting photos, maps, or documents you wish to upload?
Yes • No
By submitting this form electronically you agree to receive any/all follow up correspondence from the Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety at the email address you have provided.
