Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative*
I object to the application to expand the current mining permit. The current Permittee has not demonstrated the
ability or motivation to adequately adhere to environmental standards and protect the natural resources of the
area.Since acquiring the mine in 2017, it was issued a cease-and-desist order for heavy metal release in 2021,
which was only lifted in 2023,and already in 2024 further metal release was detected, raising doubts about the
adequacy of the new treatment system. The Permittee should not be granted a permit lasting fifty years when it
has not been able to operate responsibly for five, and for twenty times greater acreage.Any permit should be
limited in duration and or size until the Permittee can materially demonstrate a consistent ability to operate
responsibly, and require the maximum permissible financial warranty to redress potential further incidents.
The permitted area is adjacent to Roosevelt National Forest and others of immense recreational, ecological and
tourism value for Colorado.Adverse impacts to groundwater pose a danger not only to Nederland, but other
communities downstream. In order to protect these natural resources, the environmental protection plan should
be comprehensive, accounting for impacts to water and wildlife, and offering reliable protection against further
harm, before any new permit is issued. Until and unless the Permittee can prove, through its own safeguards,
independent studies, and consultation with the US Forest Service and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, that it is
able to protect the state's natural resources, I ask that you deny the application.
Permitting Action Comment/Objection is Regarding
• New Permit Change to Existing Permit
