Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative*
I want to preface this by saying I understand the need for mined resources in today's modern society. I also
don't want this mine to cease operations. Mining has a long history in Colorado and was the driving force
behind the founding of my alma mater, the Colorado School of Mines. From the time this mine was founded up
until today, our society's understanding of the environmental impact of itself has changed significantly. And with
that comes new requirements to ensure a far more limited impact on the land than we thought.
So,after reading the current operator's Notice of Violation No. MB-2021-017 outlining the current operator's
violations brought before the MLRB in Dec'21 and Jan'22;after reviewing their unexpected exceedence from
their WQCD permit in Dec.'24,only 4 months ago,and carefully considering their requested expansion from
about 8.95 acres to approximately 200 acres, I object.
I don't think they've shown appropriate environmental considerations for long enough to think about such an
expansion. I understand that they may find meeting the requirements of the WQCD permit easier with more
land, but first, lets ensure they can do it reliably with what they have.As they aren't showing that. If they were
asking for an expansion to 12-15 acres, I'd be more inclined to agree with their requests. The thing is,an
expansion to 200 acres feels more like they want to expand the operations of the mine 10 fold instead of just
make their operations easier to manage.
