Comment/Objection Narrative*
I have read the newspaper articles regarding the DMO application for Grand Island Resources LLC to resume
mining at Caribou/Cross Mines above Nederland. As a resident of the Nederland area for 23 years, I am writing
to urge the Division of Reclamation and Mining Safety to consider specific concerns as you consider their
application.
Local residents greatly appreciate the public access granted to us by the owners of this property surrounding
Caribou Hill.We hike in that area and avoid crossing the gates demarking the land that the mining company
needs to run its business, respecting their need for privacy and safety of their mining operation.
On the land immediately next to their restricted area, I have witnessed grouse, marmots, moose, elk, and other
animals.Wildflowers here are prolific, the best for miles around, including in recent years the uncommon
Spurless Columbine and unusual shades of pink and purple Mariposa Lillies. It is a rare access point for seniors
and the less physically abled to enjoy mountain wildflowers and wildlife without miles of alpine hiking. We would
like to see this important wild space protected to the best of your ability.
As one who has toured the mine more than once when it was under the care of Tom Hendricks, I am familiar
with the underground tunnel systems and great care Tom took to keep his operations as inobtrusive and quiet
as possible,as well as the residuals from his operations clean to the standards required.
While I have not studied the application, my understanding through the media is that it does not clearly indicate
their intentions regarding above-ground surface use of their land. Expansion from the current"less than ten
acres"to the proposed 225 acres concerns me.
We do not wish to see a large surface strip mining operation at this site. If their expansion is largely
underground in such a way as to preserve the integrity and stability of the surface land, I do not object to them
accessing the minerals for which they have purchased legal rights.
I anticipate that the applicant will be required to maintain all safety precautions to avoid land, air, and water
contamination and am aware that they have taken measures to ensure this,so I am not voicing an objection to
their business.
I am concerned that expansion threatens the natural landscape surrounding the current mining operation.
My request of the DRMS is that you protect the surface land, both its quality and quantity, for the sake of wildlife
flora and fauna and keep the surface land, water, and air as undisturbed as possible.
If it is within your power, please also ensure continued access for the public to be allowed to walk on the land
we have enjoyed for 150 years surrounding the old townsite of Caribou.
Thank you for your attention to these concerns.
Permitting Action Comment/Objection is Regarding
• New Permit Change to Existing Permit
Permit Number*(')
Enter a valid permit number
M1977410
County*
Colorado County where the proposed operation is located
Boulder
Enter one county only
Site Name
Caribou and Cross Mines
Perm ittee/Operator Name
Grand Island Resources LLC
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Are there supporting photos, maps, or documents you wish to upload?
Yes • No
By submitting this form electronically you agree to receive any/all follow up correspondence from the Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety at the email address you have provided.
