Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative*
Dear Boulder County Land Use Department,
I am writing to express my firm opposition to Grand Island Resources'application to expand their mining
operations near Nederland from 9 acres to 200 acres. This expansion poses unacceptable risks to human
health, the local environment, and the economic foundation of our mountain community.
1. Risks to Human Health and Environmental Safety
First and foremost, the health and safety of residents in Nederland, Boulder, and downstream communities
must take precedence. Mining activities, particularly at the scale being proposed, are well-known sources of
groundwater and surface water contamination. Leachate from mining operations can carry toxic heavy metals
like lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury—substances known to cause serious health effects, including
neurological damage,developmental delays in children,organ failure,and cancer.
In 2021,the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment(CDPHE)issued a cease and desist order
to Grand Island Resources after discovering illegal discharges from the Cross and Caribou mines. These
discharges contained multiple heavy metals exceeding regulatory limits, with lead and other toxins entering
waterways near our town. In response, the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board fined the company in early
2022, underscoring ongoing concerns about its environmental stewardship and commitment to compliance.
