March 21, 2025 RECEIVED
MAR 2 6 2025
Colorado Division of Reclamation,
To Division of Reclamation, Mining &Safety, Mining and Safety
My name is Jeff Eckstrom and my wife Becky and I have owned a cabin at 1410
Caribou Road, near Nederland for over 30 years. We have lived there during a time
when the mine was open and also when it was closed. The obvious affects of the
working mine are, more traffic on the road, more wear from potholes, caved in ditches
on switchbacks, etc. Nothing major, but an inconvenience
One story we did want to share was a time when some of our friends parents came to
visit. Our friends worked during the day so they asked us to show them the old
townsite of Caribou. On the way up we told the story of long time Nederland miner
and friend, Tom Hendricks, his legacy and the mine. When we got to the sign at the
top of the mines driveway our guest wanted to take a picture of the Mine sign. He got
out, aimed his camera at the sign and immediately some workers, that were nearby
came running, not jogging, I mean running because he was aiming his camera towards
the sign and area I suppose. They didn't want any pictures taken of their property
operations. They were direct, to the point and said, no pictures. We knew our rights
and being able to photograph anything our eyes can see from a public roadway, but
instead told them we were tourist, at which time their full demeanor changed, with
them telling us about great hiking away from Caribou. It really seemed like they were
hiding something.
Also, another concern is the potential of pollution to our water if the operation does not
follow/ignores proper protocol or if there is an accidental situation. Our dog, and
several of our neighbors' dogs drank the water and cooled off in Coon Track Creek
regularly during the summer that it was contaminated due to improper mining protocol.
It appears (GIR) has been irresponsible in its mining practices in the past and that can
possibly lead to disasterous results for the area and beyond. The potential of
contamination to our water and land is not worth the risk. We would like to see the
mine closed for good.
Thank you for this opportunity.
Sincerely,
h• r\
Xe
L
ff&Becky Eckstrom
1410 Caribou Road, Nederland
