Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative*
The Division of Reclamation and Mining Safety is considering a proposal to drastically expand the Cross Gold
Mine, which is in the Caribou area outside of Nederland and discharges into Coon Track Creek, which
ultimately runs into Barker Reservoir(the main drinking water source for Boulder). I OPPOSE THIS
EXPANSION!While the Cross mine has been in operation for more than 40 years, it received a Cease-and-
Desist order from the Water Quality Division due to excessive discharge(and a failure to reign it in)of lead,
cadmium, zinc, silver, and copper into Coon Track Creek. The proposed permit would expand the mining
operation from 9.99 acres to 205.7 acres, authorize active underground mining for gold, silver, lead, and zinc,
excavate and expand tunnels to support mining for the next 50 years, and build an ore processing mill on site,
without an explanation of how extraction chemicals would be stored and safely managed. Extraction chemicals
and how they would be stored was not included in the permit request. If the DMO permit is granted, the
changes in GIR's operations may have serious implications for the Nederland area and Boulder. As a Boulder
resident who consumes water from this area and who enjoys hiking in the Nederland area, this is very
concerning!
Permitting Action Comment/Objection is Regarding
• New Permit Change to Existing Permit
