Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative*
I own property on E 1st St in Nederland ,CO which border middle Boulder Creek.Although I now live along
North Boulder Creek north of Nederland, I had a home with a well on Caribou road and have hiked Hicks Creek
many times. Drainage from the Cross Mine flows through Nederland and enters Barker which is part of the City
of Boulder water supply.
The new proposal by Grand Island resources to re-open and expand the Cross mine will expose fresh mine
waste(tailings)to weathering and runoff containing lead, copper, arsenic and zinc. Exposure to these toxic
heavy metals should not be increased for the well owners along Caribou road or for those dependent upon the
Barker water supply. The Cross Mine lies within and adjacent to the Indian Peaks wilderness. Heavy
recreational use ending at the top of Caribou Road will be adversely affect by expansion of this mine.As a
geologist I have previously worked on the tailings at Fremont Pass(AMAX.)No DMO should be granted to
Grand Island Resources without a detailed geochemical analysis of the hydrological impacts from dumping
fresh tailings at the head of this watershed.GIR claims of being able to safely monitor and filter this runoff are
unsubstantiated. If GIR finds less profitable ore at the Cross Mine how will a water treatment plant be operated
and by whom and for how long once the tailings are exposed at high altitude just below tree line?
Just as for the AMAX tailings at Fremont Pass, almost no revegetation is possible at this altitude and will
require the financial resources for water treatment and monitoring for generations to come. MLRB needs to
engage with the Nederland community before any permits are issued to GIR.
