Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative*
As the elected representative of HD49 of Nederland and the western flank of the city of Boulder, I have strong
concerns about the potential expansion of mining operations of the Cross gold mine, owned by Grand Island
Resources(GIR). I believe this expansion merits thorough scrutiny, and I ask for a public hearing. My
professional background is a PhD Iimnologist, and I served on the city of Boulder's Water Resources Advisory
Board. I also was a research scientist at CU Boulder and taught and conducted research at CU's Mountain
Research Station, located close to Caribou. I'm well versed in the deleterious effects of acid mine drainage, and
I have grave concerns about the potential effects of expanding mining operations by GIR,who has had multiple
violations of state of discharge permits and a cease and desist order in 2021.The permit request requires more
scrutiny in a public setting. 1,along with several other elected officials representing Boulder and Boulder County
have a recently published Op-Ed expressing concern about potential water quality effects of expanded mining
operations https://www.dailycamera.com/2025/03/16/guest-opinion-lesley-smith-possible-expansion-of-mining-
operations-in-boulder-county-raise-concerns/
Permitting Action Comment/Objection is Regarding
New Permit Change to Existing Permit
