Comment/Objection Narrative*
We are writing to express our strong concerns regarding the proposed dredging operation and sand plant
installation by the Farmers Reservoir and Irrigation Company(FRICO)near our community. As residents of
Beebe Draw Farms,we,along with many of our neighbors, are deeply troubled by the potential environmental,
health, economic, and quality-of-life impacts this project will have on our homes and families.
One of our primary concerns is the massive accumulation of sand that has already been stockpiled within one
mile of our community. This sand pile not only obstructs our once-beautiful view of the lake but also creates
hazardous conditions due to airborne dust and particulate matter. The strong winds in our area often carry fine
sand particles, increasing the risk of respiratory problems, allergies, and other health complications for
residents,especially children and elderly individuals.
Additionally, the proposed sand plant's operation schedule of 24 hours a day, seven days a week raises
significant concerns about noise pollution, light pollution, and increased traffic hazards. The continuous
movement of heavy trucks in and out of the site at all hours would not only contribute to excessive noise but
also pose safety risks for pedestrians and other drivers in the community. The potential deterioration of our local
roads from constant truck traffic is another pressing concern that must be addressed.
We understand that FRICO needs to continue its operation to have the ability to dredge and sell the sand for a
profit. However,we strongly urge them to consider relocating the sand plant and piles of sand to another side of
the lake, away from our community and homes. This would help mitigate the negative impacts on our residents
while still allowing the company to conduct its business.
Furthermore, because Milton Reservoir is over a 100-year-old reservoir,we believe that the sludge being
removed from the lake needs to be thoroughly tested for possible toxic properties.Given the long history of
agricultural and industrial activities in the region, there is a legitimate concern that the sediment may contain
harmful contaminants that could pose environmental and health risks if not properly managed.
We respectfully urge the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety to carefully evaluate the
environmental and community impact of this project before granting any approvals. We ask that a thorough
environmental impact assessment be conducted, including studies on air quality, noise pollution, traffic safety,
and overall public health risks.
Furthermore,we request that community input be considered in the decision-making process, ensuring that the
voices of affected residents are heard and acknowledged.
We appreciate your attention to this matter and would welcome the opportunity to discuss our concerns further.
Please keep us informed of any public meetings or hearings related to this project.
Additionally,we have attached a picture of the current stockpile of sand near Milton taken from our backyard
deck to give you some perspective of how close our homes are to the blowing sand and mining operation. We
have also mailed your department additional photos.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Permitting Action Comment/Objection is Regarding
- New Permit Change to Existing Permit
Permit Number* (?)
Enter a valid permit number
M2024057
County*
Colorado County where the proposed operation is located
Weld
Enter one county only
Site Name
