Cross Gold Mine
December 2024 H-2

habitat of spruce-fir forests and alpine meadows. They breed near lakes, marshes, ponds, and bogs
with sun exposure and shallow water.
Cutthroat trout (various species, various designations of threatened/endangered): The majority of the
site is within the potential presence area of the cutthroat trout. There are various species of cutthroat
trout in Colorado; the greenback cutthroat trout is federally & state threatened, while the Colorado River
and Rio Grande cutthroat trout are listed as ‘state special concern’. The CPW mapping service does
not specify which of these species may be present at the site.
Lake chub HUC 12 presences (state endangered): The majority of the site is within the potential
presence area of this species. Lake Chub resides usually at the headwaters of small mountain streams.
Lynx (federally threatened and state endangered): The lynx has potential habitat mapped on the
outskirts of the site to the north, east, and south where little to no surficial activity is occurring. There
are approximately 75-100 lynx throughout the state of Colorado.
Wolverine (state endangered): The westernmost extents of the site are partially within wolverine
potential habitat. However, there is currently no known population in Colorado.
4. General Effect on Wildlife from Mining
The site is a high-altitude mining operation with a limited growing season. Impacts to wildlife from
historically ongoing operations have been insignificant due to minimal surface activity associated with
this operation. On-going operations under an active underground mining operation will also have
minimal impacts to wildlife. It is GIR’s goal to make every effort to be aware of wildlife in order to
prevent and or mitigate potential impacts from all surficial and underground activities. The changes
proposed in this amendment will have little to no additional impact on wildlife.
