Cross Gold Mine
December 2024 i-1

Introduction
The Cross Gold Mine site is an active gold and silver mining operation (Colorado Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety [CDRMS] 110(2) Permit M-1977-410, issued November 3, 1980) that
includes both the Cross Mine and the Caribou Mine. It is located approximately 4.5 miles west of
Nederland, Colorado, adjacent to the Roosevelt National Forest, at an elevation of roughly 9,700 feet
above mean sea level. The site encompasses parcels of land in Section 9, Township 1 South, Range
73 West of the 6th Principal Meridian, within Boulder County, Colorado. Coon Track Creek, a tributary
of Beaver Creek, bisects the site. Beaver Creek flows into Middle Boulder Creek, which ultimately
discharges into Barker Reservoir.
Grand Island Resources is seeking approval from CDRMS to convert its current Limited Impact 110
permit for the Cross Gold Mine (M-1977-410) into a Regular Designated Mining Operation (DMO) 112D
permit. This conversion is prompted by CDRMS’s determination that the Cross Gold Mine meets DMO
criteria due to the potential for mineralized materials to generate acidic water. The site already employs
a water treatment system to ensure compliance with state water quality standards.
This region of Boulder County has a long history of gold and silver mining, with activity dating back to
the 1870s, well before modern regulatory frameworks. The Cross Gold Mine was originally developed
and permitted in the 1970s, following the establishment of mine regulations in Colorado. Modern
operations began in 1973 when Mr. Tom Hendricks acquired and rehabilitated the Cross Mine, followed
by his acquisition of the Caribou Mine in the 1980s. Both mines have remained in production ever
since.
In 2021, CDRMS classified the Cross Gold Mine’s discharge as warranting DMO status. Grand Island
Resources has prepared this conversion application to ensure the Cross Gold Mine permit adheres to
all current DMO regulations, including the development of an Environmental Protection Plan. No
expansion of the current operations is planned at this time. The updated permit boundaries will
encompass larger areas of land controlled by Grand Island Resources surrounding the active mining
sites. Although no new disturbances are currently planned for these additional areas, their inclusion will
streamline permit management and support more effective maintenance activities at the Cross Gold
Mine.
