Trapper Mine accomplishes backfilling of the mined pits primarily with draglines, using overburden
and inter-burden material from a cut to backfill a previous adjacent cut. Other equipment such as
bulldozers, scrapers, backhoes, front-end loaders, and trucks are also used to backfill areas. Once
backfilled, bulldozers and/or graders grade the area to achieve approximate original contour. The
approved reclamation plan for the Trapper Mine calls for backfilling and grading mine excavations and
shaping the backfilled areas to the approximate configurations shown on the Postmining Topography
Map, Map MJ2 in the permit. Graded areas are to blend into the surrounding adjacent areas. Every
year TMI submits to the Division their Annual Reclamation Report(ARR)revising Appendix W of the
permit. Each ARR includes a map showing actual post-mining topography from the previous year.
After final backfilling and
grading, topsoil is required to be
placed on the spoil to a depth of
12 inches on rangeland. A
variation of +/- 2 inches is
allowed due to compaction and
operational considerations as per
TMI's permit(page 4-256). TMI
verifies topsoil replacement
thickness by scraper load counts.
DRMS also verifies all topsoil
application for permit compliance
as soon as possible after
completion.
Photo 2: Topsoil pile in D Pit waiting to be spread,
photo July 2023.
Photo 3: Topsoiling activities in D Pit,photo September 2023.
DRMS has not yet verified topsoil depths for the SL25 parcels as topsoil was partially placed in 2023.
An annual cover crop of triticale was aerially seeded in late autumn of 2023 to hold the recently worked,
loose soils over the winter and spring runoff seasons. Emerging vegetation was noted at the time of
inspection. Permanent seed mix is scheduled for seeding in the autumn of 2024.
Permit Number C1981010 Prepared by: R.Reilley
SL25 Page 7 of 21
