PART 3-EXECUTION
3.01 GENERAL
No material shall be placed in any portion of the reclamation slope or demising berm until the foundation and mine
highwall for each section has been dewatered, stripped, excavated, suitably prepared, and has been approved by the
Engineer.A keyway shall be excavated below the demising berm to the extents shown on the plans. A foundation
check sheet shall be signed by the Contractor and Engineer before fill placement.
All cavities, depressions and irregularities, within the area to be covered by embankment fill and which extend below or
beyond the established lines of excavation for reclamation slope or demising berm embankment foundations, shall be
filled with embankment materials as specified for the overlying embankment.
3.02 FOUNDATION PREPARATION
A. Mine Highwall
The existing mine highwall slopes shall be graded, excavated or cleared of deleterious material. Highwall
overhangs shall be sloped back. Loose slough shall be removed prior to placing reclamation slope soils.
Loose or slough soils on the slope may be removed as the embankment soils are being constructed.
Any gullies or other slope disconformities shall be excavated or smoothed and compacted to a uniform slope
free of any depressions or cavities, prior to fill placement.
B. Removal/Stripping of Weathered Bedrock
The weathered bedrock shall be stripped to an approximate depth of 1'beneath the reclamation slope-
demising berm/weathered contact as directed by the Engineer. Where the bedrock is excavated, the
foundation appearance shall be a mottled mixture of colors,brown/orange in some areas where the
weathered bedrock extends deeper than 1'and gray/blue in areas where the weathered bedrock is less than
1'thick.
Care should be taken that slabs of bedrock are not dislodged during the foundation bedrock stripping
processes that increase the bedrock excavation beyond 1'. Shallower passes with excavating equipment
may be required during stripping to prevent slab dislodging along bedding planes.
In the demising berm area,a keyway shall be excavated below the weathered bedrock to the depths shown
on the plans.
The entire foundation and key shall be moisture conditioned, rolled and compacted with a sheepsfoot
compactor prior to placement of the first lift of soil. A smooth drum roller shall not be used to compact the
foundation.
The foundation shall be inspected by the Engineer, and a foundation check sheet shall be signed by the
Contractor and the Engineer prior to the placement of fill.
3.03 STRIPPING(refer Site Preparation and 02200)
3.04 PLACING RECLAMATION SLOPE AND DEMISING BERM MATERIALS
02/18 Section 02290-Page 3 of 6
