Soils Unit Fh is
located in the northwest corner of the permit area is of only minor extent. Soils Unit Cr
comprises about one-third of the proposed permit area. It is mostly located on the western
slope of the terrace and is predominately clay, with minimal sand or gravel. It therefore will
not be significantly impacted.
The remaining three soil units, CyF, GeD, and Fo comprise the area of mining. We were able
to locate Ecological Site Descriptions (ESD) for CyF and Fo. We were not able to find an
ESD for soils unit GeD. We will assume the two available ESD's site information is adequate
for soils unit Ged.
(b-1) Describe the relationship of the present vegetation to the soils:
Following is the relationship of the present vegetation to the soils for ESD R048BY235 CO
(Soils Unit CyF which runs the full length of the permit area:
Ecological dynamics
The"bald"appearance of this range site is because of the absence of large shrubs.Grasses and cushion type
forbs characterize the aspect. Important grasses are bluebunch and streambank wheatgrass, needle-and-thread,
Junegrass, Indian ricegrass and blue grama. Cushion type and mat forming forbs and shrubs include fringed sage,
low rabbitbrush, buckwheat,daisy, phlox,globemallow, pussytoes,nailwort and loco(Astragalus)are prominent.
Percent ground cover for the plant community is approximately 25%.
Few species invade this site and it is sparsely vegetated to nearly barren following prolonged overgrazing or other
severe disturbances.
54
