The landowner, Dr. Corley, did not attend
the inspection. The Division did not enter onto the landowners property. The GEC Mine was a surface mine for
which the Division has revoked the bond and terminated the permit. Therefore, no mine operator remains. All
bond monies available to the Division were utilized by the Division for reclamation activities and no reclamation
bond money remains to conduct maintenance activities. The weather was clear and sunny and ground conditions
were dry. Temperatures during the inspection were around ninety-eight degrees fahrenheit.
As a result of a meeting which occurred on November 13, 2018 between the Corley Company and the Division,
only portions of the site which are able to be viewed from the gated county road were inspected (Photo 1), this
area is adjacent to the Southfield Mine permit boundary. For more information on the 2018 meeting, please refer
to previous inspection reports conducted by the Division.
RECLAMATION SUCCESS - Rule 4.15, Rule 3:
Reclamation across the observable area has had mixed success. The East Pit Area and Chen’s Hill area were
observed for revegetation. Most of the landscape in this area is well established with vegetation along areas of
lesser slope. A few larger erosional features have developed over the years following major precipitation events.
Several gullies can be observed along the northern slopes of the East Pit Area as well as the Chen’s Hill. Major
erosion is noted along drainage intersection between Chen’s Hill and the old county road that runs through the site.
Over the years, Pond A has completely filled in with sediment and drainage along that area naturally has been
directed around the pond back into the native drainage.
