Permit M-1977-493—Climax Mine Technical Revision 37 (TR-37)
Soil depth to bedrock is greater than 60 inches. The reaction of the soil is neutral to
moderately acid.
The O horizon thickness ranges from 1 to 5 inches.
The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 4 or 5 dry, and 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 1 to 3.
The texture of the fine earth fraction is loam or silt loam. The soil has 5 to 50 percent rock
fragments.
The B horizon has hue of 10YR, 7.5YR or 5YR, value of 5 to 7 dry, and 3 to 5 moist, and
chroma of 3 to 4. The texture of the fine earth fraction is loam to sandy clay loam. The soil
has 40 to 60 percent rock fragments.
Histosols
The Histosols consists of deep and very deep, poorly and somewhat poorly drained soils made
up primarily of decomposing organic matter. These soils occur on level and sloping landscapes
which range from 0 to 30 percent. The elevation range is 9,000 to 12,000 feet. Mean annual
precipitation is 20 inches. The mean annual air temperature is 32°F. A representative pedon of
this soil is located in the NE 1/4, SW 1/4, sec. 22, T.14S., R. 80 W., in Chaffee County, Colorado.
Oi -- 0 to 8 inches; very dark gray (10YR 3/1)slightly decomposed plant material that is 80
percent fibers unrubbed and 60 percent after rubbing; neutral (pH 6.6).
Oe --8 to 40 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) partially decomposed organic matter that is 75
percent fibers unrubbed and 25 percent after rubbing; neutral (pH 6.9).
Soil depth to bedrock is greater than 40 inches. The reaction of the soil is neutral.
The horizons consist of layers of slightly to intermediately decomposed plant remains with
occasional thin layers of mineral soil.
Cryorthents
The Typic Cryorthents consist of moderately deep, excessively drained soils. These soils occur
on very steep slopes and around the base of rock outcrops. The elevation range is over 10,000
feet. Mean annual precipitation is 15 inches. The mean annual air temperature is 32°F.
Representative Pedon:
A representative pedon of this soil is located in the SW 1/4, NE 1/4, sec. 6, T. 9 S., R. 73 W., in
Park County, Colorado. Taxonomic Class: sandy-skeletal, mixed, moderately deep Typic
Cryorthents.
Oi -- 1 to 0 inches; slightly decomposed conifer litter
AE --0 to 6 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3)very stony sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 4/3) moist;
moderate fine granular structure; soft, very friable, non-sticky, non-plastic; many fine, common
coarse roots; common fine interstitial pores; 20 percent gravel, 5 percent cobble, 20 percent
stone; medium acid (pH 5.8); clear smooth boundary.
Bw-- 6 to 10 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/4) very stony sandy loam; weak medium subangular blocky
structure; soft, very friable, non-sticky, non-plastic; many very fine, common fine roots; few fine
interstitial pores; 30 percent gravel, 5 percent cobble, 15 percent stone; strongly acid (pH 5.2);
clear smooth boundary.
Exhibit I —Appendix A I-A-56 March 2024
