ATTACHMENT A
May 5,2017
As in 2008, we are requesting a variance from the 300 foot buffer at the entrance to the
property near the Big Thompson River Bridge. At this location all activities will be confined
to the existing roadway and areas to the south as shown in Figure 3. This area does not
contain suitable Preble's habitat and there is no connectivity to other areas that do contain
habitat as there is no habitat south of this area(Photos 4&5).
The permanent 300 foot buffer area would be planted with small (3-4 plants)clumps of native
shrubs including but not necessarily limited to chokecherry (Prunus virginianus), golden
current (Ribes aureum), and American plum (Prunus americanus) spread out throughout the
buffer area. In addition to shrubs, native grasses and forbs will be planted in these areas as
well to create useable Preble's upland habitat. The final seed mixture has not been determined
but it will be approved by the Service prior to planting. Additionally, we will work with
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (M. Sherman)to obtain CPW's input on the proposed grass and
forb species as well as the locations of the shrub plantings. Lastly, there will be no livestock
grazing allowed within the permanent buffer area.
Attached is a copy of the 2008 letter.
Please contact me if you have questions.
Sincerely,
/---'-'. r"—,(
Jerry Powell, M.S.
Certified Ecologist
Certified Wildlife Biologist°
2
