Diversions and Impoundments
The constructed French drain system diverts mounding groundwater from upgradient of the
Timnath Connell Pit excavation to the downgradient recharge ponds. Although no diversions or
impoundments are proposed, the northeast corner of the proposed amendment permit area is
generally graded to drain towards the Weitzel Road extension to accommodate future storm
sewer construction. In the southwest active mine pit area, stormwater that falls directly on
disturbed areas generally drains to the mine pit floor and allowed to drain to the dewatering
sump. The mine pit will effectively contain stormwater flows and prevent surface runoff from
disturbed areas of the site.
Material Processing and Associated Facilities
An aggregate processing facility for product crushing and screening is located on the site and
used as needed. The processing facility is located within the Phase 1 mine pit. Pit run material
is hauled or conveyed to the processing plant where raw material and product stockpiles are
located. Alternatively, raw material is hauled off-site as pit run for construction use.
In addition to the aggregate processing facility, an asphalt batch plant is also in use on the site.
The asphalt plant is located in the Phase 1 mine pit near the processing facility to minimize
material handling and hauling distances.
In association with the processing facility and asphalt plant, recyclable concrete and asphalt
material is stockpiled within the Phase 1 mining pit. The recycled material is crushed and
screened for use in aggregate and asphalt products.
A mine office/scale house trailer and mine equipment maintenance building has been established
near the I-25 Frontage Road site entrance. The office/scale house and maintenance building
areas are used for employee parking, equipment fueling/lubricating, or equipment storage.
No permanent structures will be established on-site as part of the mining activities.
Maximum Mining Disturbance
In order to gain a better understanding of overall mining disturbances, it is helpful to know the
acres disturbed by different aspects of the mining operation. Each aspect is listed in the
following table with associated disturbed area. The table illustrates a point in time where the
mining disturbance could be at its maximum. At the Timnath Connell Pit site, it is assumed that
the greatest mining disturbance will exist at the completion of Phase 3 mining. Currently, Phase
1 mining is complete. Although some backfilling has occurred and recharge ponds, floodway
diversion berms, and a partial liner for the below-grade reservoir have been created, a portion of
the Phase 1 mining pit is still being utilized for material processing.
The Phase 2 mining is also complete. Unlike the Phase 1 mining area, the Phase 2 mining area
has mostly been reclaimed. The area contains the Weitzel Road extension (released from the
permit area with AR1, approval dated December 13, 2023) and the relocated Box Elder Ditch.
Timnath Connell Pit
DRMS 112 Permit Amendment Application Page 8
