Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative
The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety is charged by the public trust to be a steward of the
land, air, and water of this state. As a concerned taxpayer I am hoping that there are truly responsible people
employed who actually have the best interests of the citizens in mind when they make decisions. I particularly
am incredulous that residents have to find and pay fees to attorneys to have their legitimate concerns fairly
evaluated-especially since we employ a whole"Division"who are charged with that responsibility.
Some of what is written in this protest letter may be redundant to the information and questions already
submitted. That is because these are the relevant facts and questions,so please seriously consider the
concerns of all of us who have taken the time to write. Also keep in mind that writers are a small fraction of
those who are not only concerned, but are exasperated that those who are suppose to be protecting our
environment have not fully answered our questions nor appear to be acting on our behalf.
The CJK Milling company has admitted that their interests in this area are driven by a profit motive-they are
"cherry-picking"the tailing piles that will provide them with the most gold, silver, and other precious metals. In
short, this is not an altruistic enterprise in which they are unselfishly cleaning up the east side of Leadville. I met
several of the CJK Milling employees at the open house that CJK Milling hosted at the"Freight"venue a couple
of months ago. They readily admitted that they did not live in the Lake County area and would only be in this
vicinity as long as their employment lasted. In other words, they will not be living with the repercussions of their
actions. They fully intend to take the money and leave!
Over the past several decades, countless hours of work and millions of dollars have been spent on repairing the
devastating impacts of historic mining in Lake County on the Upper Arkansas River and its tributaries,
particularly in the California Gulch watershed where the Leadville Mill and much of the targeted waste is
located. As a result, the Upper Arkansas is now the longest continuous stretch of Gold Medal water in the
nation.
I object to this application on numerous grounds:
1.)The use of cyanide in processing tailings,
2.)The disturbance of and transport of tailings from East Side of Leadville to Mill
site,
3.)There is no foolproof method to guarantee no leakage of cyanide&other
chemicals from proposed dry stack method of storage of processed materials,
