This form is not intended for reporting of possible violations or illegal activity. Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative *
As a resident of Leadville's east side, I am adamantly opposed to CJK Milling Company's scheme to reopen the
Leadville Mill and use CYANIDE to process mine waste piles transported by truck from Leadville's historic East
Side mining district.
I have major concerns about water contamination, safety, and long-term clean-up of the operation. We cannot
afford to gamble with the health of the headwaters of the Arkansas River, which supports our wildlife, our
economy, and downstream agricultural operations that produce a significant amount of food. Additionally, I am
concerned about the movement of mine waste that is currently stable. I am concerned about dust from the
operation, and I am concerned about the number of trucks that CJK milling is proposing will move all the waste
from the east side. Our east side county roads are frequently used by people running, walking, skiing, and
biking. I am concerned about their safety with a large number of huge trucks passing by daily, likely at high
speeds. Additionally, I do not believe our county roads can handle this wear and tear, leading to long-term road
safety issues.
We in Leadville are NOT willing to be the guinea pig to see what the real environmental, health, and safety
affects are of this untested process. CJK milling is coming for a profit -once (and if ) they get it, how can we
know they will dedicated to the long term well being and safety of our community and environment. Too often,
companies are let off the hook in the wake of environmental disasters. We will not have this happen again in
Leadville. We have come too far in our journey from EPA superfund site to go back now.
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1990057
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
