This form is not intended for reporting of possible violations or illegal activity. Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative *
I'm writing in opposition to this project as it would be a giant step backwards for lake county when it comes to
environmental stewardship, quality of life and our local economy due to the poor nature of CJK Milling's proposal
and all of its detrimental implications such as the threat to nearby residences, water supply, road
degradation, heavy equipment noise, unaddressed long term impacts on water and soil and the degradation of
recreation opportunities on Leadville's east side historic mining district where the to -be -processed tailing piles
currently exist. Countless residents as well as families and athletes from nearby counties as well as the front
range take advantage of these opportunities by hiking, run ning, bicycling, skiing, snowshoeing, and snow biking,
directly contributing to our town's economy rapidly shifting into a tourism based model. The heavy truck traffic
will exacerbate the issue of airborne toxic pollutants such as Lead and Arsenic found on the east side's soil
which all human powered users would increasingly breath as the large trucks will kick up big clouds of dust
every single day,for years... this is already a problem with side by sides and OHV wreckcreation and if heavy
trucks intensify the issue,it may never be mitigated.
Another big reason for concern is CJK's lack of experience using the incredibly highly toxic Cyanide,a chemical
banned in our neighboring Summit County, exactly for the same reasons: its dangerous use in mining. The
downsides and potentially catastrophic aspects of this project are far greater than the negligible "positives" ( 20
some jobs and these employees buying coffee, lu nch,etc at local businesses) One major economic driver in this
region as well as downstream communities is recreation in the Arkansas River primarily in the form of boating
and angling (including the stretch DIRECTLY south of Leadville which is the MOST trafficked segment of white
water IN THE COUNTRY) which could be highly compromised should the project's aftermath waste containing
cyanide was to leak into the river. An economic analysis of commercial activity surrounding the Arkansas River
shows 196,100 visitors spending $19 million with outfitters on the river in 2022. Add in lodging, food, travel and
other spending and those visitors left $38.6 million in communities along the river in 2022 and supporting close
of 500 jobs. There's nothing in this project for the residents of Lake County OR the local ecosystem. Thank you
for the opportunity to be heard.
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1990057
