Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative *
I am a geologist who has studied the historic mining operations near Leadville. The CJK Milling proposal to
reopen the Leadville Mill must be stopped at all cost. It will require the disturbance of mine tailings that have
stabilized for about 150 years. It will also require the transportation of existing tailings by truck from the points of
origin to the mill after which a huge volume of new tailings will be created mixed with water and cyanide. These
new tailings will be stored in open ponds whose bottoms are planned to be sealed and surrounded by
embankments. There is a well -documented history of the breach of such ponds which result in severe negative
environmental impact to surface and groundwater. In this case, the surface waters constitute the headwaters of
the now pristine Arkansas River. Just the retrieval and transport of existing tailings will create large volumes of
dust and airborne particulate matter that is also toxic. What about the lead -bearing minerals in which CJK will
have little or no financial interest? It is not hard to imagine that when the gold and silver and the profits are
captured, the perpetual monitoring and remediation will wane and ultimately disappear in a cloud of lawsuits,
bankruptcies, etc. This is clearly a disastrous proposal with no merit.
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1990057
Permitting Action Type
i Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
County
Lake
Enter one county only
Site Name
