This form is not intended for reporting of possible violations or illegal activity. Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative *
As a citizen of Leadville, I strongly object to the CJK Milling group obtaining a state permit to "clean up" historic
mine waste. The mine tailings are stable now and disturbing them is inevitably going to put noxious particles in
the air that will combine with dust and diesel from the trucks that would be used to transport mine waste. Air
pollution and the amount of water the cyanide leaching process will require are major concerns, but the drastic
change in the landscape of our east Leadville historic district would not be beneficial. The remaining shaft and
cribbage wooden structures testifying of all the past mining activity, some buildings and trusses still standing
and very often photographed, would be destroyed in the process of getting at the tailings.
So we are talking about eliminating Leadville's past... That definitely will affect tourism negatively, not enhance it
as CJK argues! So our economy is at stake. They claim that "the land is restored to pre -mining conditions".
Apparently they don't know we live at more than 10,000 feet and that regrowing of natural vegetation on barren
rocky ground will take decades or just leave big scars worse than the tailings and remaining shafts. I am
skeptical about CJK bringing top soil, planting trees and sowing seeds after they will have taken their profit out
of the project. And who will enforce that?
However the use of Cyanide and the unexpected accidents that happened in Montana, Colorado and other
parts of the world, the possible contamination of our water sources, are on the top of my concerns.
Please let us enjoy Leadville the way it is, in a healthy environment and in peace.
