Comment/Objection Narrative*
I am writing to express my objection to the proposed reopening of the Leadville Mill by CJK Milling Company,
LLC, and the use of cyanide in processing mine waste piles transported from Leadville's historic East Side
mining district. As a concerned resident of Leadville, Colorado, I urge you to reconsider this dangerous proposal
in the strongest possible terms.
The use of cyanide in mining operations poses an unacceptable risk to public safety, water quality, wildlife, air
quality, and the overall environment. Cyanide is a highly toxic substance that can cause severe harm to
humans, wildlife, and ecosystems if released into the environment, even in small quantities. The potential for
cyanide spills or leaks during transportation and processing is a grave concern that cannot be overlooked.
Leadville and its surrounding areas boast pristine and restored natural landscapes, which are not only crucial
for the well-being of local residents but also serve as a significant attraction for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts.
The proposed reopening of the Leadville Mill and the use of cyanide jeopardize the health and integrity of our
environment, putting our outdoor recreation industry at risk.
It is imperative that the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (DRMS) carefully consider the
potential impacts of this proposal and prioritize the protection of public health, safety, and the environment
above all else. I urge the DRMS to reject the permit application submitted by CJK Milling Company, LLC, and to
uphold stringent regulations to safeguard the well-being of our community and environment.
In conclusion, I ask you to listen to the voices of concerned residents and stakeholders who oppose the
reopening of the Leadville Mill and the use of cyanide in mining operations. Our collective future depends on
responsible decision -making that prioritizes preserving our natural resources and the health of our communities.
Thank you for considering my objections to this dangerous proposal. I trust that you will act in the best interests
of Leadville and its residents.
Sincerely,
Earl Richmond
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1990057
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
County
Lake
Enter one county only
Site Name
Leadville Mill
Perm ittee/ Operator Name
CJK Milling Company, LLC
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Are there supporting photos, maps, or documents you wish to upload? *
llrr:11111111►n
By submitting this form electronically you agree to receive any/all follow up correspondence from the Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety at the email address you have provided.
