Comment/Objection Narrative*
Dear DRMS,
I very much appreciate you taking the time to hear the objections of the community about the proposed
Leadville Mill by the CJK Milling Company. The concerns and complaints are well known at this point:as a
community,we have very little reason to trust the assurances offered us by the parties that will benefit
financially from this operation. As is typical in these arrangements, those who will benefit from the project do not
live here and those that will suffer the consequences if anything goes wrong do.We are concerned not only
about our water quality--which we have fought long and hard to recover after 100 years of abuse--but also
about our beloved recreation areas where we run, hike, bike, and ski. If this permit is approved, the truck traffic
on East Fifth Street alone will have a significant impact on the east side, and living here,we've learned enough
to understand that once you start disturbing the slag piles and exposing minerals to the air,the impact is not
insignificant and the results are largely unknown.
Let me just say a few other things for your consideration and try to explain why many residents have felt such a
visceral no to this project and have not been swayed by the rather rote reassurances of CJK Milling. This is a
community whose natural environment is both incredibly pristine and incredibly disturbed. We live in a strange
juxtaposition where elk herds stand atop slag piles, where in one gulch runs the purest water in Colorado and
just one gulch over is water so orange we can't walk our dogs near it. Many of us spend year round in the
mining areas where CJK Milling will be running their trucks hauling debris. We know how fragile this ground is.
We know how fragile our water sustainability is.We remember the poisoning of the Arkansas and its effect on
every aspect of our lives. While we understand the profit motive involved in CJK Milling's desire for this project,
we do not buy the idea that this is good for us.That rings patronizingly to our ears. I've had the thought that if
the owners of CJK Milling were willing to live on East Fifth Street for the duration of their project--breathe the
dust while these piles of slag are dismantled and transported and watch the water run orange by their own
houses—or if they were willing to commit to generations of their families living downstream from their mill--if
their commitment to the well-being and viability of this community were that strong, I might be able to hear their
ideas differently. As it is,the risk is all ours. The reward is all theirs. This is a deal Leadville has struck before to
its own detriment, and we have to do all that we can not to make the same mistakes again.
Thank you for listening.
Sincerely,
Amy Frykholm
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1990057
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
County
Lake
Enter one county only
Site Name
Permittee/Operator Name
CJK Milling
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
