Comment/Objection Narrative*
I am writing this letter to express my objection of the opening of the CJK Milling Co, LLC business in Leadville
CO.
Since living in Leadville for 14 years I think it would be a complete step backwards to allow this mine to operate.
I know we have a mining history here but that does not mean it has to automatically continue into the future.
The area the company is planning to process has already been declared a Superfund site from the EPA.The
health of the Arkansas River has dramatically improved because of the cleanup from the Superfund site
designation. The idea that their operation is going to help clean up this area more is highly questionable to me.
The biggest problem I see with this operation is that it is operating in our town, not 10 miles out of town, but
right in our town! The dust alone cannot be contained in this kind of operation, I don't care what they say!The
government spent a lot of money to clean up Leadville, I can't believe they would allow this can of worms to be
opened up again!
The other major worry I have is their process of Cyanide!Once again,a lot of people LIVE here! This just does
not seem like a business that should be operating so close to a town.CJK mentions they will create jobs. The
use of Cyanide,a toxic chemical is not considered a safe job! I think there is not a shortage of work around
here, more a shortage of workers! If this was a group from Leadville starting this, it might feel different, but it is
some out of town company coming in to exploit our town that bothers almost everyone I know.
Leadville has been improving in positive directions since I have lived here. The people who visit here and the
ones who live here are environmentally conscience, and that is the draw of this place. We attract so many
people to our non-motorized events and activities, that it has been a big boom for Colorado tourism which is an
important industry too.
The idea that this mill is something that Leadville needs is preposterous! We do not need to go backwards,we
need to look to the future. The possible risks that this mill could cause just seem way too high to take a chance,
and the fact that I do not know anyone who says they would like to see it start, makes me want to speak out
against it!
I am just one opinion, but I have read many great opinions from others in our town that I completely agree with.
Please do not allow this company to operate in our town, this should not be the future for Leadville!
Richard Smith
Leadville, CO
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1990057
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
County
Lake
Enter one county only
Site Name
Perm ittee/Operator Name
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
