Comment/Objection Narrative*
I am writing to express my strong objection to the proposed cyanide gold extraction mill and excavation of
stable waste rock/tailing piles in Lake County,Colorado. As both a concerned citizen and as a retired
environmental scientist/consultant in the oil and gas industry and former state regulator of the mining industry, I
am deeply troubled by the potential environmental, public health, recreational and quality of life impacts
associated with this project.
One of the primary concerns regarding cyanide gold extraction is the significant risk of ground and surface
water contamination. Cyanide is a highly toxic substance that can have devastating effects on aquatic
ecosystems and human health if it enters waterways. Given that Lake County is home to the Arkansas River,a
vital water source for both local communities and wildlife, any contamination resulting from the proposed mill
and/or disruption of waste rock piles could have far-reaching consequences. Once considered"dead",the
Arkansas River is now classified as a Gold Metal trout stream thanks to the millions of dollars spent by the
Environmental Protection Agency to remedy the historic impacts of mining. Why risk additional destruction to
one of our communities greatest assets.
Furthermore, the excavation of stable waste rock/tailing piles on the east side of Leadville poses additional risks
to water quality and ecosystem stability. Disturbing these old piles has the potential to release heavy metals and
other contaminants into the surrounding environment, further exacerbating the threat to the Arkansas River and
its tributaries as well as air quality.
In addition to environmental concerns, the introduction of heavy equipment and extensive truck traffic will cause
a significant disruption to those who live a recreate near the mill and waste rock piles slated for excavation.
It is imperative that the state of Colorado prioritize the protection of our natural resources and the well-being of
our community over the interests of one company. I urge you to reject this proposed project.
Thank you for considering my concerns. I trust that you will make the right decision for the future of Lake
County and the state of Colorado.
Sincerely,
Stuart Francone
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1990057
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
County
Lake
Enter one county only
Site Name
Perm ittee/Operator Name
CJK Mill
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Are there supporting photos, maps, or documents you wish to upload?
Yes No
