Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative
As a permanent resident of the east side of Leadville, Colorado, I strongly object to what is now the third
attempt for a permit in the last few years by the CJK Mill group to reopen the old Leadville Mill. The comments
made by Mr. Karsh and the RJR Trout Club in his well-stated objection letter which was recently filed on this
site, sum up the terrible environmental risks that this unsustainable,waste-of-water scheme will bring to the
Leadville community, with ultimately no real or lasting benefit whatsoever to Lake County or the citizens of
Leadville, beyond a massive increase in the potential for extreme environmental damage.CJK group claims
they will solve an environmental risk on the east side of Leadville that simply no longer exists thanks to the EPA
clean-up and years of settling and on-going water containment and treatment. The CJK group will ultimately
waste millions of gallons of good water to create a new 500,000 ton hazardous open waste pile on the west
side of town, exposing and moving very dangerous materials from a contained and monitored area,to an open,
unmonitored pit of contaminated material the consistency of mud, within 1,000 feet of the headwaters of the
Arkansas and sitting directly on top of an aquifer that is widely used by west side residents. The proposal to run
80 tandem dump truck loads of hazardous material per day through the town of Leadville,365 a year for 10
years will eventually lead to a pedestrian or cyclist fatality.Traffic safety may not be something DNS/DRMS is
required to consider, but the totality of the circumstances should be considered given the extreme nature of this
permit request. I urge the Department of Natural Resources and the DRMS to reject this pathetic scheme once
and for all.The people of Lake County and the State of Colorado are depending on you to protect us from this
unsustainable and outdated gold extraction business which will only benefit a few people in the short-term.
Thank you-Steve McCauley
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1990057
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
